President Attends Inauguration of Shahid Bakeri Power Plant’s Second Phase in Semnan

On Thursday, April 18, 2024, phase two of the Shahid Bakeri Combined Cycle Power Plant was officially inaugurated in Semnan. The ceremony was attended by President Ebrahim Raisi, Abbas Aliabadi (Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade), Ali Akbar Mehrabian (Minister of Energy), along with a number of provincial officials including Abutaleb Niazi (Deputy Managing Director in the Electricity Sector for Power Plant Development), and Fereydoon Henari (CEO of MAPNA-MD1).

Phase two of the project encompassed the procurement of equipment, as well as the design, engineering, and installation of two advanced Class E gas turbine generators, capable of producing a nameplate capacity of 366 megawatts under ISO conditions. This expansion, which represents an investment of 90 million euros, is situated on a 100-hectare site in Semnan Province.

In 2023, MAPNA Development One Company was tasked with constructing the new phase, which includes the third and fourth gas units. The first unit was connected to the synchronous national grid in less than five months, with the fourth unit coming online in April 2023.

During the inauguration ceremony, President Ebrahim Raisi stated, ‘The country faced a power deficit of 22,000 megawatts, which we have managed to reduce by adding 8,000 megawatts to our electricity production capacity. This significant achievement was made possible through the dedicated efforts and collaboration of the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade.’

He continued, ‘With the upcoming third phase and the completion of the combined cycle’s steam section, the power plant’s total capacity will reach 1,100 megawatts. This expansion heralds a bright future for our national energy infrastructure, significantly enhancing our electricity supply and particularly benefiting industrial sectors. The completion of the steam section will not only increase electricity production but also raise the efficiency of the Class E gas turbines by 54 percent. This improvement is pivotal in reducing electricity costs and boosting the revenue of the facility.’

Based on the established plans, the steam section of this power plant has been commissioned with a 360-megawatt capacity and an investment of approximately 300 million euros, specifically designed to provide a stable electricity supply for industries.
