In a visit to industrial towns in the province of Semnan, the minister of Industry, Mine & Trade also visited the expansion project for Semnan Power Plant; at the same time, the construction phase began for the steam in Semnan Power Plant.
The second phase of Semnan Gas-Fired Power Plant has been launched for designing, engineering, equipment procurement, installation, and commissioning of two advanced gas-fired class E turbine generators MGT-70 (3) with the nominal capacity 366 mega watts under ISO requirements.
The task of constructing the first and second units of the plant as a second 3000-MW project (9 power plants) was assigned to MAPNA in 2008. This part of the project consisted of two turbines providing a capacity of 160 MW each (320 MW in total). The turbines were synchronized in January and February 2010 and the project was provisionally delivered in May and September 2011.
The third and fourth units were contracted out to Semnan Saman Power Plant Energy Generation Company on January 22, 2022 for synchronization over 12 and 14 months and provisional delivery over 16 months. This part of the project was then referred to MAPNA Power Plants Construction & Development Company (MD-1). Upon synchronization and connection to the national power grid, the plant began to continuously generate power as needed by the power grid at 480,000 MW at the third unit and 188,000 MW at the fourth unit of Semnan Power Plant.
Higher efficiency of MGT-70 (3) turbines over common cycle gas turbines
At this ceremony held in the presence of Semnan Province Governor, a number of industrial managers and senior directors of MAPNA Group, the CEO of MAPNA Group stated, “at Semnan Gas-Fired Power Plant, initially two units were upgraded based on a higher version model that provides higher efficiency. Immediately after that, the two next units were constructed under contracts entered into with industries. And now, all four turbine units completed by MAPNA are MGT-70 (3) turbines that provide higher efficiencies compared to common gas cycle turbines.
Mohammad Olia also stressed that “I hope the process for completion of this project will speed up through proper financing now that the work for the combined cycle project has begun. Hopefully, the combined cycle section will be constructed and completed within two years; this will provide us with the maximum energy efficiency, enabling us to provide industries across the country with the power they need. The project was commission by Semnan Saman Power Plant Energy Generation Company as the client, and MAPNA Power Plants Construction & Development Company (MD-1) represents MAPNA Group in the project.
The contract for constructing the second phase of Semnan Power Plant is the first contract of its kind entered into by the Ministry of Industry, Mine & Trade and Ministry of Energy to assign power plant construction works to domestic industries. The contract for constructing the second phase of Semnan Power Plant was signed by MAPNA Group and Mines and Metals Development Investment Company on Monday, December 20, 2021.
